Beautiful voice. Just heard her interview with Duchess of Cornwall. Loved hearing the Irish tones coming through despite all her years in England. Duchess did a good job too

Also never read her but was always fascinated by her speech story telling of some far off-land of magic & mystery. Because one of my favourite actors was Richard Harris I give her very high praise and with the greatest respect as the female version but certainly more sober and poetic but equally earnest and above all with to paraphrase Noel Coward “a very great talent to amuse.” Uniquely Special Lady RIP.

I don't think of her as the 'female version' of anyone, she was uniquely, wonderfully herself. A person should read Edna O'Brien if they want to understand her.

I just came back here from the new version/follow up of this conversation, on the Guardian channel. I found it very worthwhile and just as relevant as when I 1st listened, and maybe even slightly more-so, both, in conjunction with the recent talk (incl. the anecdotes they repeat!), as well as the time passed inbetween. Geeez, I benefit from listening to these two so immensely - listening to their observations fully evaporates any doubts I may have had about my "approach to", understanding of, and interactions with 'Reality'. Phew!! And it's very good fun!

Filer doesn't actually say much about schizophrenia here. He does a good job of unpacking the positions of mainstream psychiatry and what I and others call antipsychiatry (much to the irritation of some antipsychiatrists, who prefer critical psychiatry), but he doesn't really go into schizophrenia here. He also gives the impression that he's more antipsychiatry in his leanings. The industry's decision to publish a fictional account of life with schizophrenia (Filer's The Shock of the Fall), rather than a person with schizophrenia's account of schizophrenia (such as Saks' The Center Cannot Hold) never sat well with me. It felt like the industry was saying 'we're interested in mental illness, so long as they come from outside voices'.
